Georgetown U Introduces Social Justice Core Requirement
Going into effect with the beginning of the fall 2024 semester, all undergraduates will take three courses: a mandatory one-credit seminar–Race, Power, and Justice at Georgetown–and two additional courses that draw upon themes such as marginalization, inequity and identity.
U Utah Establishes School of Environment, Society & Sustainability
The result of a merger between the department of Geography and the Environmental and Sustainability Studies program, the new school includes physical sciences; social and behavioral sciences, which include environmental justice, environmental sociology, politics ecology and economic geography; and data science.
Bentley U to Purchase 100% Wind Power
The university recently signed a four-year agreement to purchase electricity from a wind farm in Maine. The purchase is anticipated to supply 100 percent of the electricity needs of the university through 2027. The wind site will be incorporated into an intensive field course on renewable energy and energy efficiency.
U Hawaii Manoa Receives $1.25M for EJ Initiative
The university's College of Arts, Languages and Letters recently received a $1.25 million grant from the Mellon Foundation that will fund an interdisciplinary environmental justice (EJ) initiative within the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. The funding will help establish two new faculty positions, a humanities lab to develop new teaching materials, and a forum for professional development and the exchange of ideas.
DOE Announces 10 HBCU Clean Energy Prize Recipients
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the first 10 prize winners in the inaugural Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Clean Energy Education Prize Partnerships Track. Each winning team will receive $100,000 to support partnerships between HBCUs and other universities and partners to build new programs and provide professional opportunities that will equip HBCU students with the skills needed to succeed in the clean energy industry.
