Initiatives championed by UAB Sustainability have led to national recognition this spring from the Department of Energy and pro-bono consulting services to help expand sustainability work on campus.

Johns Hopkins U Launches Campus as Lab Grants

Launched by the university's Sustainability Leadership Council and the Office of Sustainability, the new program enables Johns Hopkins researchers and instructors to test scalable sustainability solutions within the context of university infrastructure, operations, and administration. Researchers can get grants up to $50,000 while instructors are eligible for $12,000 and students $10,000.

Furman University President Emeritus David E. Shi's recent $1 million gift to the endowment of The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities will ensure fellowships and its other signature programs and services.

Rhodes College Receives $800K to Establish Institute for Race and Social Transformation

A $800,000 three-year grant recently awarded to the college from the Mellon Foundation will establish the Institute for Race and Social Transformation. The institute will serve as an intellectual hub for research and curricular development focusing on racial equity, discrimination and justice in Memphis and the Mid-South region.

Georgia Southern U Launches Earth, Environment & Sustainability School

In early July, the university's College of Science and Mathematics launched a new School of Earth, Environment and Sustainability (SEES). The new school will blend several science disciplines to better serve a growing student demand for sustainability and environmental science education. Under the new school, students can pursue a Master of Science in Environmental Science while working toward their undergraduate degree.

Emory U Introduces Grants Addressing Racial and Social Justice

The new funding opportunity aims to promote racial justice and equity by supporting Emory faculty research projects that will contribute to the eradication of inequities in society. Standard grants are $150,000 spread over three years; a small number of special projects will be considered for up to $300,000 total over three years.

U California to Award $80M in Climate Change Research Grants
