2023 STARS Cohort and End of Year Discount
Through the end of 2022, AASHE is offering two opportunities for institutions to participate in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS). The STARS Cohort Program is designed to guide new and returning participants through the reporting process by providing hands-on training and support. AASHE is also offering a 20 percent discount to institutions without a current STARS subscription. This offer is only applicable to new STARS full access subscriptions, not renewals, which are already substantially discounted. The deadline to sign up for the cohort and/or the discount is Dec. 31.
Call for Proposals: US Summit on Transformative Education
The summit, happening virtually on Feb. 23-25, 2023, will focus on Sustainable Development Goal 4.7, including education for sustainable development, global citizenship education, environmental education, climate education, and peace and human rights education. Summit organizers are accepting proposals through Dec. 15.
2023 Colby Summer Institute in Environmental Humanities
Happening in Maine July 31-Aug. 6, 2023, the Colby Summer Institute in Environmental Humanities gathers scholars to explore how the environmental humanities contribute to the theorization, imagination and practice of socially just and ecologically hopeful futures for humans and nonhumans. The deadline to apply is Feb. 1, 2023.
Sustainable Lab Supplies Purchasing Survey
Staff at the University of Virginia and University of Alabama at Birmingham invite participants to complete a survey aimed at understanding procurement of lab supplies at major institutions. The survey is designed to collect information about researchers’ knowledge of the ACT Label and opportunities to support sustainable purchasing of lab supplies.
2023 Student Corporate Engagement Challenge
Intentional Endowment Network's Student Corporate Engagement Challenge invites students to pitch an investment in a publicly-traded company, and include in that recommendation a shareholder engagement strategy focused on addressing inequality and the climate crisis. Benefits to participation include access to mentorship and networking opportunities, free and discounted registration to educational workshops and industry events, presentation opportunities, and interview opportunities. The deadline to sign-up is Dec. 23.
Sustainability Reporting Survey
The International Sustainable Campus Network invites participation in a survey on sustainability reporting at higher education institutions. The survey aims to understand existing sustainability reporting practices in the global higher education sector. The deadline to participate is Dec. 14.
Second Nature Pro Bono Consulting
Signatories to one of Second Nature's Presidents’ Climate Leadership Commitments and/or members of the University Climate Change Coalition are eligible to apply for pro bono technical assistance and consulting services to help with climate action planning and procurement of renewable power, valued up to $20,000. The deadline to apply is Jan. 6, 2023.
Campus Race to Zero Waste
Campus Race to Zero Waste, formerly Recyclemania, is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an eight-week period each spring, colleges across the U.S. and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are ranked in various categories.

AASHE 2023 Professional Learning Opportunities
AASHE’s 2023 learning opportunities aim to stimulate professional and personal growth for higher education sustainability leaders who drive change within their institutions. Workshop and course topics cover curriculum development, STARS data quality, sustainability communications and more. The lineup also includes two cohort-based, collaborative programs–Sustainability Change Leadership Development Program and Advancing the UN SDGs through Education, Training and Regional Collaboration. 2022 AASHE Sustainability Awards Ceremony
On Dec. 8 from noon to 1:00 p.m. Eastern, AASHE is hosting a live reveal of the 2022 AASHE Sustainability Award winners. From over 430 applications and nominations, the 12 winners represent global sustainability leadership from Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, Fiji, Kenya, Switzerland, United States and Wales.
Online Certificate on Education for Sustainable Development
This online program, offered by Earth Charter International, is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to deepen their understanding, knowledge and skills to integrate Education for Sustainable Development and education for global citizenship into classrooms and curricula. It runs from Jan. 18 through June 28, 2023.
International Student Challenge to Achieve Zero Hunger
The International Student Challenge to Achieve Zero Hunger invites undergraduate and graduate students to generate projects that will make a meaningful impact on global hunger and nutrition problems. Students teams will develop novel ways to achieve zero hunger, Sustainable Development Goal 2. This challenge is organized by a consortium of universities as part of the University Global Coalition Decade of Action Initiative. The interest form is due by Nov. 11.
TASK Pilot Study by Sulitest
Sulitest invites students to participate in the international TASK (The Assessment of Sustainability Knowledge) pilot program. The Assessment of Sustainability Knowledge is a measurement tool for individuals' knowledge of sustainability. Responses to the survey will be analyzed in an effort to improve the tool. Pilot participants of TASK will receive a voucher to complete the official certificate for free once it is live in spring 2023. The pilot will be conducted until Nov.18.

Sustainability in Collegiate Athletics Survey
In collaboration with several members and networks focused on sustainability in collegiate athletics, AASHE is exploring the development of an assessment framework to rate the sustainability performance of U.S. collegiate athletic programs. This short survey seeks input from those involved in college athletics and/or sustainability to help inform such a framework.
WorldWide Teach-In Google Group
This Google Group is a space to connect with other climate-concerned educators across disciplines who are working to foster dialogue on the climate crisis at their institution and build collective power.
GRITS User Community Calls
Free and open to anyone, the Sustainable Endowment Institute will host a series of calls in November for GRITS users to share progress on projects, and learn from and network with peers. GRITS, Green Revolving Investment Tracking System, is a platform designed for tracking, planning and sharing energy, financial and carbon project data from green revolving funds.
Pollution Prevention Works: A Storytelling Challenge for Students
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency invites college students to develop and submit a compelling story about steps a company has taken to reduce toxic pollution. The story should also highlight how those practices or techniques benefit the business and positively impact communities and the environment. All entries must be submitted by Feb. 17, 2023.
AASHE Governance Call for Applications
AASHE seeks candidates to serve on its board of directors and Advisory Council that can lend their time, talent and expertise to advance all aspects of AASHE's mission. In particular, AASHE welcomes applications from Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and those with expertise in racial equity and social justice, fundraising and/or corporate engagement. Interested candidates should submit an application by Nov. 4.
Reducing Bias in Recommendation Letters Workshop
How to Reduce Bias in Recommendation Letters is a workshop for counselors, teachers and admissions representatives offered through ACCEPT (Admissions Community Cultivating Equity & Peace Today). The two workshops offered–Oct. 6 and 27–will help participants identify biases, apply an equity lens, and identify stereotypical language.
AASHE Workshop: Behavior-Centered Design for the Environment
In this virtual AASHE workshop on Nov. 17 from 2 - 5:00 p.m. Eastern, Rare’s Center for Behavior and the Environment is facilitating an interactive behavior-centered design for the environment training to help participants expand their behavior change for sustainability toolkit. This program offers participants a deep dive into a few key steps of the behavior-centered design journey, such as developing a behavior change theory of change and an assessment plan. The deadline to register is Nov. 17 at noon Eastern.
US Department of Energy 2023 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge
The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is an annual collegiate competition that challenges students to design and build high-performance, low-carbon buildings that mitigate climate change and improve human quality of life through greater affordability, resilience and energy efficiency. The deadline for team registrations is Oct. 26.
Faculty Well-Being in Higher Education Survey
Faculty are invited to be in a research study to understand factors that influence well-being among faculty in higher education. Conducted by researchers at the University of Minnesota Duluth, the voluntary survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. It will remain open until Oct. 31.
Sustainability and Climate Change Call for Student Research
Sustainability and Climate Change invites student authors and author teams at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as those five years or less into their postgraduate level, including Ph.D. candidates, to submit viewpoints, commentaries, perspectives and original research.
Project Green Challenge 2022
Project Green Challenge calls on students to take action on climate change, public health, sustainability, social justice and advocacy. From Oct. 1 - 30, registered participants will receive a uniquely themed challenge each day inviting them to complete actions and upload deliverables to acquire points. Up to twenty prizes will be awarded daily based on outstanding content.
2022 GameDay Football Challenge
The National Wildlife Federation and the Campus Race to Zero Waste invite colleges and universities to sign up for the 2022 GameDay Football Challenge. Participating institutions will track and report their recycling, food organics and trash for one home football game. Winning campuses will be featured on the CR2ZW website and promoted via email and social media.
Sustainability Pre-Conference at Society for Personality and Social Psychology 2023
Organizers of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP) conference invite abstract submissions for the 2023 SPSP Sustainability Pre-Conference. This year’s theme is “Diversifying Sustainability Psychology: Towards the inclusion of diverse populations, actors, and methodologies.” The conference will be held virtually on Feb. 22, 2023. Abstracts are due Nov. 15.
UNFCCC Negotiations and COP27 Webinar Series
A three-part webinar series, developed by the University Climate Change Coalition, Second Nature, and the Research and Independent Non-Governmental Organizations constituency, will provide a comprehensive overview of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process, including policy questions and issues to be addressed in the upcoming COP27 negotiations.
Energy Star Higher Education Benchmarking Initiative (HEBI): Round Two

The 2023 Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit is happening from Feb. 5–7, 2023, at the University of Miami. Wege Prize 2023
Wege Prize is an annual competition challenging students to collaborate across institutional, disciplinary and cultural boundaries to redesign the way economies work. Participants contend for over $65,000 in total cash prizes. The Wege Prize is organized by Kendall College of Art and Design’s Wege Center for Sustainable Design with support from the Wege Foundation. The deadline to submit a team application is Oct. 31.
USAS Student Labor Organizing Bootcamp
United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) is offering a day of interactive workshops about student and worker organizing, launching and winning strategic campaigns on campus, and organizing skills to build lasting student and worker power. Currently, workshops are planned for Tufts University, University of Maryland College Park and Gonzaga University.
