The last day to submit a proposal and sign up to be a reviewer for the 2017 AASHE Conference & Expo, themed “Stronger in Solidarity”, is Feb. 13. EPA Green Power Leadership Awards

The annual Green Power Leadership Awards, hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, are competitive awards that recognize the leading actions of organizations, programs and individuals that significantly advance the development of green power sources. The awards application period will be open from Jan. 26 through March 24. The EPA is hosting an awards overview webinar on Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. Eastern.

Abstracts are being accepted for the Symposium on Sustainability in University Campuses, being held Sept. 17-19 at University of São Paulo, in São Paulo, Brazil. The conference theme is "Campuses as living labs for connecting the nexus energy, climate and sustainable development". Abstracts are due on Feb. 25.

Princeton Review & Sierra Magazine Reporting Deadline: March 3, 2017

AASHE is continuing its collaboration with the Princeton Review and Sierra magazine to reduce the data collection and reporting burden for members. Campuses wishing to earn a Princeton Review Green rating and a Sierra Cool Schools ranking can submit data by March 3 through the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) Reporting Tool.

Nobel Peace Prize for Sustainable Development

A group of teachers and practitioners of Ecological Economics invite nominations for "Sustainable Development" as the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. Organizers propose that the Nobel Peace Prize be awarded to The Club of Rome, Herman Daly and Pope Francis for their roles in the advent, creation of guiding principles and institutions, and refocusing society’s attention on the urgent need for sustainable development. Nominations from qualified individuals are being accepted through Feb. 1. Nominations that are sent after Feb. 1 will be accepted into the 2018 prize.

Higher Education Sustainability Staffing Survey

The Higher Education Sustainability Staffing Survey is a biennial survey conducted by AASHE that seeks to understand the continuously growing career field of sustainability professionals in higher education. A follow-up report will be published in late 2017 that summarizes the results. The deadline to complete the survey is March 3.

2017 RecycleMania Sign-Ups Open

Interested parties can now sign up to participate in RecycleMania, a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an eight-week period each spring, colleges across the U.S. and Canada report the amount of recycling and trash collected each week and are then ranked in various categories based on most recycling on a per capita basis, best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste, and amount of combined trash and recycling. Full registration in the competition must be completed by Feb. 3.

2017 AASHE Sustainability Award Winner Webinar Series

AASHE's first webinar series of 2017 will take a deeper look into the winning submissions from the 2016 AASHE Sustainability Awards. In an effort to share best practices and nuanced strategies of what makes these institutions and individuals winners, each webinar will look more closely at the approaches used to affect institutional change, demonstrate student leadership and advance campus sustainability research. The first webinar, Developing Energy Efficiency and Water Conservation Strategies Through Student Research, featuring students from the University of Houston and University of Michigan, is Feb. 15.

2017 AASHE Conference & Expo: Call for Reviewers

Reviewers are needed to ensure a conference program that includes a well-balanced mix of high-quality sessions that meet the diverse interests of attendees. Based on a predetermined set of criteria, reviewers will assess conference abstract submissions for the 2017 AASHE Conference & Expo. All reviewers examine roughly 25 proposals using a quantitative scale on topics in which they offer a high level of expertise. Deadline to sign up is Feb. 15.

Course on Forming a Library Action Plan for Engagement

This online, asynchronous course, offered Jan. 2-27, will focus on the role of the academic librarian in the sustainability movement. Through a reflective process, readings, exercises and participation in a discussion forum, participants will create an action plan that matches the needs of their library and institution. APPA Facilities Manager: Call for Article Submissions

The March/April 2017 issue of APPA’s Facilities Manager will highlight innovative sustainability programs and services from colleges and universities. Articles should be 200 words in length and include the author's name, title, affiliation and email. Articles may include one photo submission, which should be high resolution. Proposals for the seventh annual Collegiate Sports Sustainability Summit are being accepted. The Collegiate Sports Sustainability Summit is seeking presentations that model innovative, novel approaches to ways that athletic and sports programs can join the campus movement to engage students, fans and alumni in making collegiate sports socially, economically and environmentally responsible. AESS 2017 Conference Call for Proposals

The ninth annual Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences (AESS) Conference will be held June 21-24 at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. AESS is accepting proposals for individual paper and poster presentations, and proposals for full panels, workshops, discussion symposia and mealtime roundtables. The conference theme, Environment, Wellness and Community, will allow AESS to showcase its interdisciplinary strengths on this vitally important topic, including such issues as problem-solving through multi-disciplinary data and analysis, multiple perspectives, team building and collaborations, and future-oriented teaching across disciplines. NWEI Campus EcoChallenge

The Campus EcoChallenge, offered by Northwest Earth Institute, is a platform for campuses or classes to engage in sustainability challenges over a two week window. Challengers can set their own two-week window between the period of January and June 2017. Challenges, which can complement syllabi and/or campus-wide initiatives, include but are not limited to energy, waste, transportation, food, water and community engagement.

Letter to President-Elect from Higher Education Leaders on Climate Action

Collaboratively developed by a diverse group of higher education institutions and Second Nature, an open letter to the incoming President and members of Congress asks for participation in international climate efforts, support for climate research and investment in climate solutions. The National Science Foundation and the American Association of Community Colleges present the third annual Community College Innovation Challenge that asks student teams to innovate a STEM-based solution to a real-world problem. Call for Proposals: SSCC Student Summit

Call for proposals and registration is open for the second annual Student Summit as part of the Smart and Sustainable Campuses Conference on March 26, hosted by American University. The Student Summit program will include specifically focused workshops and presentations that allow for in-depth analysis and exploration of the four tracks of the summit, which are Renew, Restore, Regenerate; Food, Consumption and the Built Environment; Outreach; and Climate Justice. Proposals are due by Jan. 30.

Survey on Edible Food Recovery at Higher Education Institutions

As part of a senior honors project by a student at Messiah College, this survey will attempt to examine edible food recovery programs at higher education institutions. Edible food recovery programs divert edible food from the waste stream and redirect it to people facing food insecurity. The data collected from this survey will be used to examine the drivers behind an institution's choice of whether or not to employ an edible food recovery program as one of its sustainability efforts. Included at the end of the survey is an option to receive the results of this study upon this project's completion.

Sustainable Horticulture Student Scholarships

The GWA Foundation, a subsidiary of the GWA: The Association for Garden Communicators, is offering financial assistance to deserving students who wish to pursue or further a career in horticultural communications. This year's scholarship awards are $500 or $2,000 per student and include a complimentary full year membership to GWA. Annual scholarship awards are intended as a tuition aid or as an aid in the purchase of textbooks, garden books and special horticultural projects to further a student’s horticultural journalism skills.

Survey on Energy and Water Efficiency of Stadiums and Arenas

The Green Sports Alliance, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program, the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institute of Building Sciences have developed a survey aimed at better understanding the characteristics of stadiums/arenas and their energy and water impacts. The findings from this survey will help identify opportunities to reduce energy and water use, save money and potentially develop an ENERGY STAR score and certification for stadiums and arenas.

Opportunity to Host 'Land Grab' Film Director

Campuses have the opportunity to host a screening of Land Grab that brings the film’s director, Sean O’Grady, to campus to talk about the film. Land Grab is a new documentary about one man's (John Hantz) effort to clear one square-mile of blighted Detroit neighborhood with his own money in an effort to green the neighborhood while at the same time making it safer and increasing property value.

North American Laboratory Freezer Challenge

The International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories and My Green Lab have partnered to establish the first annual North American Laboratory Freezer Challenge. This challenge is designed to encourage all laboratories to recognize the benefits of good cold storage management, such as reduced costs associated with maintaining refrigeration units and development of ongoing cold storage management practices that support efficiency and maximize space utility. EAUC Conference 2017 Call for Proposals

Session proposals are now being accepted to the U.K.-based Environmental Association of Universities and Colleges (EAUC) annual conference. This year’s theme, Global Goals: Local Action, aims to recognize the critical role higher education institutions play in developing and implementing solutions to climate change and realizing the U.N. No-Cost Solar Screenings and Implementation Assistance for Universities

In support of the U.S. Department of Energy's SunShot Initiative, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is offering approximately 40 hours of no-cost technical assistance to universities seeking to increase the deployment of mid-scale solar photovoltaic systems at universities. Assistance will provide project development support to higher education institutions as they deploy solar on-campus, which includes assistance writing and/or evaluating request for proposals, advice on financing structures and interconnection agreement facilitation. Applications are due November 18.

Registration Deadline Extension: Sustainability Across the Curriculum Workshop

Apply by Nov. 11 for the Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership workshop from Jan. 5-6, at Emory University.
