Sustainability Across the Curriculum Workshop at the University of South Carolina
This workshop will explore how educators can utilize their unique role to inspire, inform and train today’s students to become tomorrow’s sustainability champions. Intended to support faculty of all disciplines and levels of familiarity with sustainability, this workshop will provide hands-on activities, case studies and examples of how developing sustainability curriculum can transform challenges faced by today’s environment, local economies and society. The deadline is Oct. 15. The University of South Carolina is one of 13 regional AASHE Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum.
Sponsor-A-Hive Bee Partnership
Open to universities and colleges in the U.S., the Sponsor-A-Hive program, hosted by The Honeybee Conservancy, provides free bees and equipment to help schools safely set up, maintain and observe on-site bee sanctuaries. The deadline to apply to sponsor a hive is Oct. 31.
Campus Sustainability Month Movie Screening Opportunity
Held every October, Campus Sustainability Month is an international celebration of sustainability in higher education. As part of the celebration, AASHE and Bullfrog Films are offering institutions the opportunity to screen one of four movies in October for the discounted rate of $85 (normally $100+) or purchase the DVD with a 15 percent discount.
Green Ambassador Student Volunteer Recruitment for Recycle Rocks Initiative
The Love Hope Strength Foundation is recruiting student volunteers for their Green Ambassador program, part of the Recycle Rocks Fall 2017 campaign at the BB&T Pavilion in Camden, New Jersey. Volunteers will help concert-goers divert their waste from the landfill by helping them place the material in the proper collection bins. All volunteers will be given a voucher for a future concert ticket.
2017 Campus RainWorks Challenge
The Campus RainWorks Challenge seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students to foster a dialogue about responsible stormwater management and showcase the environmental, economic and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Student teams will design an innovative green infrastructure project for their campus that effectively manages stormwater pollution while benefitting the campus community and the environment. Entries are due by Dec. 15.
Energy Dept Race to Zero Student Design Competition
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Race to Zero Student Design Competition challenges collegiate teams to apply building science principles to create cost-effective, market-ready designs that meet DOE's Zero Energy Ready Home program requirements. Interested teams must complete and submit the team application by Nov. 7.
APPA Sustainability Innovation Award
Nominations and applications are now being taken for APPA’s 2018 Sustainability Innovation Award in Facilities Management. This honor is designed to recognize and promote unique and innovative sustainable practices in educational facilities and campus environments that lower costs, create a sustainable environment, or otherwise benefit the educational institution, student success and environmental stewardship. The deadline to apply for the 2018 award is Nov. 30.
Wege Prize 2018 Call for Applications
Wege Prize 2018 is looking for undergraduate and graduate students who want to work together to re-think and re-design the way economies work by creating regenerative solutions that have a widespread and lasting impact. Teams will contend for $30,000 in total cash prizes. The deadline for team applications and research plan is Nov. 15.
AASHE Member Discount: $100 Off Sustainability Certification Through ISSP
The International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) offers students, faculty and staff from AASHE-member schools a $100 discount on the ISSP Sustainability Associate (ISSP-SA) credential exam. The program is designed to recognize the knowledge, skills and abilities of those in the sustainability field, including students with knowledge of core sustainability concepts.
Carnegie Community Engagement Classification Workshops
Campus Compact is offering a series of workshops and webinars designed to assist campuses preparing for the Carnegie Community Engagement classification. This series will support member campuses that are first-time applicants or reclassifying for the 2020 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification.
Online Certificate: Education for Sustainable Development
Using the Earth Charter as a central feature, this five-month program is designed to provide participants with the understanding, knowledge and skills to integrate Education for Sustainable Development and Education for Global Citizenship into curricula with depth and creativity.
Call for Contributions: Encyclopedia of Sustainability in Higher Education
The Encyclopedia of Sustainability in Higher Education will be produced as a tool to support universities across the world to implement sustainable development in higher education. The peer-reviewed resource, to be published by Springer as part of its World Sustainability Series, will document 500 expressions related to sustainable development.
Campus Energy Infrastructure: Challenges, Solutions & Financing
Second Nature and the New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability (NJHEPS) invite campus stakeholders to a free workshop about identifying and financing solutions to common energy challenges. Hosted by Ramapo College of New Jersey on Sept. 22, participants of this hands-on workshop will share and learn about energy efficiency and clean energy strategies that can help their school meet budgetary, infrastructure and greenhouse gas reduction goals. Participants will also review and discuss the benefits and challenges of various finance options that are relevant for their institutions.
NWEI Campus EcoChallenge
Registration is now open for this year's Campus EcoChallenge, hosted by Northwest Earth Institute. Offered by Northwest Earth Institute, the Campus EcoChallenge is a platform for campuses or classes to engage in sustainability challenges over a two week window.
GUPES Green Gown Awards
The Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES) Green Gown Awards are accepting applications for achievements in campus sustainability. Supported by the United Nations Environment Program, the GUPES Green Gown Awards are open to GUPES members only. Applications are due Oct. 12.
Keep It Cool Student Campaign
Keep It Cool is a national campaign mobilizing students to help retailers save energy. Students from campuses around the country can participate by identifying retailers that keep their front doors open. Campaign organizers will educate retailers who allow energy to escape through their open doors and will recognize shops that “Keep It Cool” with closed doors.
Sustainability Across the Curriculum UMACS Faculty Workshop
This Upper Mid-West Association for Campus Sustainability (UMACS) pre-conference workshop will give participants tools to design a new sustainability-focused course, and/or redesign an existing course, course unit or assignment. The workshop will introduce key sustainability concepts, pedagogical approaches (e.g., integrating service learning & “campus as a living laboratory” projects), and strategies for transforming departmental or campus curriculum. Participants will be paired with discipline-specific mentors to support course and curriculum development both during and after the event. The deadline to register is Sept. 15.

AASHE invites applications from institutions to join a cohort of 10 to 12 AASHE members that will receive in-depth training, guidance and tools to implement a behavior-based paper saving program on their campus. Representatives of these institutions will participate in a day-long, in-person training at the 2017 AASHE Conference and Expo. Participants will receive ongoing support over the course of the upcoming academic year to refine, implement and evaluate their paper saving campaigns. Applications are due by August 18.

SustainUS Fall 2017 World Bank Delegation Call for Applications
SustainUS invites applications to be part of a delegation of 15-20 young people that will attend the World Bank annual meetings from Oct. 9-15, 2017, in Washington, D.C. In partnership with civil society organizations, the SustainUS delegation aims to influence the World Bank Group to change its policies on climate change and equitable distribution of development finance. Applications are due Aug. 8.
Solar Energy Photo Contest
The U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative is looking for solar energy technology photos from across the U.S. The Hit Me with Your SunShot photo contest will award solar photographers with $2,500 in cash prizes, including a $500 grand prize, and the winning photographs will be featured by the Department of Energy.

Construction Waste Recycling Management Survey
The Johns Hopkins University Sustainability and Recycling and the Design and Construction departments are conducting research on construction waste generation, tracking and diversion on campus. The survey seeks to understand how higher education institutions approach construction waste management and the stakeholders involved. Survey participants will receive the survey results.
Climate Change Theatre Action 2017
Climate Change Theatre Action, a collaboration between York University and partners, invites people to host readings or short plays about climate change in support of the 2017 United Nations COP23 meeting. Those that sign up will present an event between Oct. 1 and Nov. 18, 2017, that addresses an aspect of climate change. Event organizers will provide a collection of 50 short plays to choose from, resources, and organizational and marketing support.

The ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge offers complimentary webinars covering a broad range of topics to help campuses increase democratic engagement and student voting rates. AASHE Mentorship Program: Call for Applications
In response to member requests for increased knowledge exchange between campus sustainability practitioners, AASHE is inviting applications into its new Mentorship Program until Aug. 4. This program connects sustainability staff and faculty with peers to share knowledge, collaborate on projects and advance the field of higher education sustainability in general. Participants can expect a semi-structured process to facilitate ongoing collaboration between mentors and mentees, who will be matched based on desired goals, relevant experience and overall expertise. Apply by Aug. 4 to mentor a colleague and/or get support from a peer.
Call for Applications: Bicycle Friendly University
The Bicycle Friendly University program recognizes institutions of higher education for promoting and providing a more bikeable campus for students, staff and visitors. The program evaluates applicants’ efforts to promote bicycling in five primary areas: engineering, encouragement, education, enforcement and evaluation/planning. The deadline to apply is Aug. 10.
Leading for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education Online Course
This online course is for higher education professionals who are currently working or interested in issues of diversity, equity and inclusion on college campuses. Some objectives of the course are to understand the historical narrative of institutions and institutional structures that have created instances of inclusion and exclusion in colleges and universities, and being able to describe how transformational leadership is enacted for diversity, equity, and inclusion in a complex and contested environment.

The Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC) is currently accepting proposals for speakers, sessions and case studies around the theme of Equity & Diversity: Planning for Equitable Actions through Climate Resilience. The event is scheduled to take place Feb. 6-8, 2018 in Portland, Oregon. The aim of WOHESC is to enliven the role of higher education in the future of Washington and Oregon and the role students play in a future world. The deadline for submission is July 17.

Academia United on Climate Change Letter
Academia United on Climate Change is a sign-on letter open to all members of the academic community that encourages the leaders of U.S. colleges and universities to work together and with other coalitions in leading the U.S. effort to combat global climate change.
