Call for Submissions: AASHE Sustainability Awards With New Category
The annual AASHE Sustainability Awards provide global recognition to the individuals and organizations leading the higher education sustainability movement. By raising the visibility of high-impact sustainability projects, pioneering research and outstanding leadership, the awards help to disseminate innovations and inspire progress toward environmental, social and economic health. New this year is the Lifetime Achievement Award. Submissions and nominations are due by May 11 to be considered for an award.
The Solvable Problem Challenge
PYXERA Global invites submissions for solvable problems, defined as relatable, widely acknowledged problems with solid evidence that they can be solved. One idea will be selected to become a featured track at the Global Engagement Forum: Live in October 2018, a two-day event seeking to develop cross-sector concepts that address urgent, yet solvable problems within the United Nations Global Goals. The deadline for submission is Feb. 28.
Clinton Global Initiative University 2018
Students currently enrolled in an institution of higher education may apply to attend the Clinton Global Initiative University 2018 (CGI U), which will take place from Oct. 19-21, 2018, at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Hosted by President Clinton and Chelsea Clinton, the 11th annual CGI U meeting will provide opportunities for students to network with one another, attend skill sessions and meet with leading social innovators, and connect with alumni mentors.
Student Survey on Attitudes Toward & Expectations for Sustainability
The National Union of Students (U.K.) encourages students from any institution of higher education in the world to participate in the survey that aims to capture attitudes towards and expectations on sustainable development, regardless of the students interest or involvement in sustainability. The deadline to complete the survey is March 18.
AASHE Workshop: Sustainability, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Workshop
This workshop, happening June 20–22 at North Hennepin Community College in Minneapolis, is for faculty, administrators, staff and student activists of all disciplines, as well as community organizers and city officials and planners, who wish to interconnect and integrate sustainability, diversity, equity and inclusion into their campus, curriculum and departments. The format will include opportunities for participants to discuss topics from their own experiences to inform the discussion and gain insight from the perspectives of the presenters as well as fellow participants. The deadline to register is June 8.
AASHE Workshop: Sustainability Professionals Retreat
The Sustainability Professionals Retreat, taking place from June 24-27 at Swarthmore College near Philadelphia, is designed to encourage professional growth and skills-building. With a focus on flow, systems thinking, skills-building and strengthening relationships and community, attendees will explore important trends in the higher education and how to position sustainability as a solution driver. The deadline to apply is May 1.

2018 Green Power Leadership Awards
The annual Green Power Leadership Awards serve to recognize the leading actions of organizations, programs and individuals that significantly advance the development of green power sources. The awards application period will close on April 6.
CUMU Higher Education Anchor Mission Pilot Initiative
The Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) invites its members to participate in a pilot program aimed at advancing anchor mission approaches within the institution and the community it serves. With access to facilitated peer learning exchanges, tools and strategies, institutions participating in the pilot year will help to co-design a set of activities to develop innovations for the field. The deadline to apply to participate is Feb. 23.
Princeton Environmental Ideathon
Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply for the Princeton Environmental Ideathon, a program where students, along with academics and industry leaders, will address environmental challenges and propose solutions to developing a more sustainable modern city. The program runs from April 13-15 at Princeton University. The deadline to apply is March 1.
Green Office Implementation Online Course
The online course from rootAbility and Leuphana University Lüneburg aims to help students and staff establish a student-led sustainability team that works alongside them on student engagement and communication. The program is based on the Green Office Model, which won the 2015 UNESCO Prize on Education for Sustainable Development.
Call for Abstracts: Symposium on Sustainability in University Campuses
The second Symposium on Sustainability in University Campuses, themed transforming campuses towards sustainable development, is accepting abstract proposals for its December 2018 conference in Italy. The aim of the conference is to demonstrate the role of campuses as platforms for transformative social learning and research, and explore the means by which university campuses can be made more sustainable. Abstracts are due March 25.
Survey on Sustainability Initiatives of Higher Education Institutions
This survey is collecting data related to introducing and maintaining the sustainable development strategies and activities at different universities. It will catalog and examine the different challenges and opportunities for integrating sustainability into the institution, whether throughout the whole organization or in a partial manner.
Aggregating Higher Education Demand for Renewables: A Primer
This primer highlights the benefits to higher education institutions of aggregating energy demand with other institutions to achieve economies of scale when sourcing renewable energy. It describes best practices for pursuing group renewable energy aggregations structured as power purchase agreements (PPAs) and examines several completed group purchases as well as some in progress.
2018 AASHE Conference & Expo Call for Proposals Closes Feb. 16
The last day to submit a proposal and/or sign up to be a reviewer for the 2018 AASHE Conference & Expo is Feb. 16. Hosted in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 2-5, the conference theme is “Global Goals: Rising to the Challenge” and will focus on the critical role of higher education in achieving the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals, which are ambitious global targets to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. All accepted presenters receive a discount applicable to full conference registration.
AASHE Member Discount Expires Soon: 10% Off Sustainability & Behavior Change Certificate
AASHE members can receive a 10 percent discount on tuition for all courses associated with the Sustainability and Behavior Change Certificate through the University of California San Diego Extension. The new certificate in Sustainability and Behavior Change provides an online setting for an advanced educational training in conservation psychology, behavior change strategies and community engagement tools. The discount expires Feb. 28.
Brooklyn Urban Ecology and Environment Program
Designed for underrepresented undergraduate students who want to be environmental scientists, the Brooklyn Urban Ecology and Environment Program is a National Science Foundation sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates program aimed at developing practical experience in research integrity, scientific communication and quantitative literacy.
National Wildlife Federation EcoLeaders Survey for Students
Students are encouraged to take a research survey designed to help the National Wildlife Federation grow its EcoLeaders online community and provide professional development and career services to students and young professionals interested in sustainability work. Call For Scripts: Social Issues Theater
Inner Voices Social Issues Theatre at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign is now accepting submissions for its spring 2018 National Call for Scripts, which aims to address complex, timely and often difficult social issues that connect deeply to university communities and beyond, through performances followed by post-performance audience dialogues. The theme will focus explicitly on social justice as environmental justice. Selected scripts are given an award payment. Scripts must be submitted by no later than Feb. 28.

Social Innovation, Social Entrepreneurship & Change-Making Learning Outcomes Survey
Ashoka U is curating a publication tentatively called Trends in Changemaking Learning Outcomes, which is designed to support educators as they develop change-making offerings at their institutions. The product will share trends in the learning outcomes driving social entrepreneurship, social innovation, and change-making education and highlight examples. Ashoka U encourages people to participate in a survey to capture curricular and co-curricular learning outcomes designed for single courses, course sequences, venture incubators, fellowships, change-maker leadership programming, or other change-maker offerings. The deadline for submission is Feb.12th.
Annie’s Sustainable Agriculture Scholarships
Open to undergraduate or graduate students studying organic and/or regenerative agriculture, Annie's is accepting applications for its scholarship program, which will grant $20,000 in funding to 20 students. Applications are being accepted until March 15.
University BioQuest Competition
Open to anyone, University BioQuest invites individuals to join their university's biology and/or sustainability departments to map biodiversity on campus. The competition uses the real-world nature exploration app QuestaGame and will take place in April 2018.
North American Laboratory Freezer Challenge
The International Laboratory Freezer Challenge promotes sample accessibility, sample integrity, reduced costs and energy efficiency by harnessing a spirit of competition within and between laboratories. The challenge occurs over a five-month period where individual labs and institutions work at their own pace to implement optimal cold storage management practices.
The Campus Kitchens Project Grant Competition
The Campus Kitchen Project is offering $5,000 startup grants to colleges and universities that are interested in addressing food waste on their campus and food insecurity in their community. The deadline to apply is April 20.
Food Waste & Hunger Summit: Call for Sessions and Organizations to Table
The Campus Kitchens Project's Annual Food Waste & Hunger Summit, held on March 24-25 at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus, is a two-day conference that brings together students, young professionals and field experts from across the country to discuss complex issues related to hunger and food waste and exchange best practices in the movement towards a waste and hunger free world. Spring 2018 Climate Justice League With Sierra Student Coalition
College students across the U.S. and Puerto Rico are invited to apply to become an organizing fellow with the Sierra Student Coalition. Nobel Peace Prize for Sustainable Development Nomination Request
A group of teachers and practitioners of Ecological Economics encourages nominations of "Sustainable Development" for the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. Organizers propose that the prize be awarded to The Club of Rome, Herman Daly and Pope Francis for their roles in the creation of guiding principles and institutions, and refocusing society’s attention on the urgent need for sustainable development. Nominations from qualified individuals are being accepted until Jan. 31 at midnight Central European Time.
AASHE Member Discount: $100 Off Sustainability Certification Through ISSP
The International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) offers students, faculty and staff from AASHE-member schools a $100 discount on the ISSP Sustainability Associate (ISSP-SA) credential exam. The program is designed to recognize the knowledge, skills and abilities of those in the sustainability field, including students with knowledge of core sustainability concepts.
APPA’s Facilities Manager Magazine Call for Case Studies
The March/April 2018 issue of APPA’s Facilities Manager magazine will highlight innovative sustainability programs and services at colleges and universities. Submissions will also be considered for a forthcoming publication of sustainability success stories. Submissions are due by Jan. 19.
PLAN Student Advisory Board
Post-Landfill Action Network is seeking six to eight founding members for a Student Advisory Board that will help shape PLAN’s programming. Members of this board will provide insight on how PLAN’s resources and guidance are used on different campuses, give feedback on proposed initiatives, and have the opportunity to propose and/or create new resources or campaigns.
Energy Innovation Student Leadership Experience
Open to undergraduate and graduate engineering students currently studying in the U.S., this immersive program at Penn State at The Navy Yard in Philadelphia combines hands-on learning in sustainable energy systems with an internship experience. It enables students to experience challenging real world problems and work with leading companies and research teams on innovative solutions.
Call for Reviewers: 2018 AASHE Conference & Expo
Higher education sustainability stakeholders are invited to sign up as conference abstract reviewers for AASHE 2018. Reviewers help develop a conference program that includes a variety of high-quality sessions to meet the diverse interests of attendees. All reviewers examine roughly 25 proposals on topics in their area of expertise. The deadline to sign up is Feb. 16.
