2020 Saving Endangered Species College Student Art Contest
The Endangered Species Coalition and National Wildlife Federation invite students to submit entries for the 2020 Saving Endangered Species College Student Art Contest. The contest is part of the 15th annual Endangered Species Day, happening on May 15, 2020. The first place winner will be featured in National Wildlife magazine and promotions for Endangered Species Day 2020.
Biomimicry Global Design Challenge 2020
The Biomimicry Global Design Challenge asks teams of students and professionals to address critical global issues with nature-inspired solutions that align with one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals. The design concepts may address any aspect of climate change adaptation, mitigation and reversal in any sector of the economy. Submissions are due May 1.
Circular Economy Program: From Linear to Circular Atlanta
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation encourages postgraduate students or professionals who are committed to accelerating the transition towards a circular economy to apply for the Linear to Circular program. Through expert-run sessions and collaborative team-projects, this program gives participants the opportunity to expand their circular economy knowledge and professional networks. The deadline to apply is Feb. 4.
Patagonia Case Competition
Patagonia and the Berkeley Haas Center for Responsible Business seek proposals from graduate students to tackle the interconnected business and sustainability aspects of a current, real-life issue facing the outdoor gear retailer Patagonia. First place teams win $15,000, second $5,000 and third place $2,500. The deadline for team sign-up is Jan. 15 and case proposals are due Feb. 9.
Climate Justice League
The Sierra Student Coalition's Climate Justice League is a 10-week organizing fellowship for high school and college-aged young people to learn key organizing and leadership skills, meet other youth activists from around the country, and take action for climate and social justice. Apply for the spring fellowship by Jan. 17.
2020 International Laboratory Freezer Challenge
The Freezer Challenge is a cold storage competition for laboratories run by the non-profit organizations My Green Lab and the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories. The International Laboratory Freezer Challenge utilizes friendly competition over a five-month period during which individual labs and institutions work at their own pace to implement optimal cold storage management practices. Any type of laboratory is eligible to participate.
Higher Education Sustainability Staffing Survey
This survey, conducted every two to three years by AASHE, seeks to understand the career field of sustainability professionals in higher education. The survey link can be shared with colleagues that have a sustainability role in higher education. A follow-up report will be published later this year that summarizes the results. The deadline to complete the survey is Feb. 14.
Beyond Waste Student Summits
The Beyond Waste Student Summits bring together students to understand the systemic impact of waste, from extraction to disposal. These full-day, regional leadership intensives welcome students from all levels of experience and interest. Attendees will have the opportunity to collaborate on simulated campaigns that range from building zero waste campus infrastructure to standing in solidarity with front line communities. All solution-building will address accessibility, equity, and systemic oppression. Regional events begin Jan. 18 and go through March 29 and span the northwest, northeast, south coast and mid-Atlantic regions.
Sierra/Princeton Review Data Sharing Procedures
AASHE is collaborating with Sierra and The Princeton Review to allow colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada to use the STARS Reporting Tool to share their sustainability data for potential inclusion in Sierra's Cool Schools ranking and The Princeton Review's Guide to Green Colleges. The submission deadline for inclusion in both rankings, as well as AASHE’s annual Sustainable Campus Index, is March 6.
Call for Proposals: 2020 Environmental Advocacy Symposium
Organizers for the Environmental Advocacy Symposium invite scholars, educators, practitioners and students to submit proposals to the one-day convening on the research and practice of environmental advocacy. The Environmental Advocacy Symposium will take place June 10, 2020, at Pace University, followed by the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences Conference.
Survey: Benefits & Challenges of Sustainability Curriculum
A student in the University of Colorado, Boulder Environmental Studies program is conducting research about the benefits and challenges of sustainability curriculum in higher education institutions. The information will be used for an honors thesis report that aims to provide data on the benefits of increasing the sustainability learning opportunities at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Sustainability Across the Curriculum Online Workshop
This online course runs from Jan. 20 through March 15 and is designed for higher education instructors wishing to infuse sustainability (ecological stability, social equity and economic vitality) into their curriculum regardless of the discipline. The intent of this course is to identify areas of intersections across disciplines. Effective assessment of critical thinking skills, collaboration, creativity, and the ability to analyze, discuss and create solutions to real world sustainability problems will be explored. Registration is open through Jan. 19.
Seeking Examples of Behavior Change Approaches
The U.N Environment Program and Behavioral Insights Team are seeking examples of approaches taken to encourage sustainable behavior on higher education campuses. These examples will be used to inform a new piece of research being developed to support behavior change in higher education institutions. The deadline to contribute is Dec. 10.

2020 Keeling Curve Prize
The 2020 Keeling Curve Prize competition will award $25,000 to each of 10 projects designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or increase their uptake. Prizes will be awarded to two projects in each of the following five categories: transport and mobility; social and cultural pathways; energy; finance; and capture and utilization. The application deadline is Feb. 10 or when 300 applications are received – whichever comes first.

The theme is Resiliency in a Changing World. This Way to Sustainability is a student-run conference focused on challenges, ideas, solutions and resiliency for a more sustainable future. Call for Papers: 'Interdisciplinary Sustainability Curricula in Higher Education'
A special issue of Sustainability aims to explore and develop the common priorities of the design and nature of undergraduate and graduate programs in sustainability-related areas. Particularly encouraged are articles that introduce and assess innovation in novel pedagogies, and curricular and course design; articles that consider transdisciplinary synthesis of ideas and practice within the context of sustainability competencies; and articles that address challenges in implementation such as institutional/structural and economic barriers.
APA-SCD Excellence in Sustainability Awards
The Awards for Excellence in Sustainability is an annual program by the American Planning Association Sustainable Communities Division (APA-SCD) that honors projects, plans, policies, individuals and organizations dedicated to supporting sustainable communities. The deadline to nominate is Jan. 18.
SIILK Network Mentorship Program
The Sustainable and Impact Investing Learning and Knowledge (SIILK) mentorship program pairs students with diverse backgrounds and experiences with experts from the sustainable investing industry to provide real-world experience in sustainable investing and build their professional networks. The goal of the mentorship program is to create a more diverse pipeline of finance professionals with a solid grasp on sustainable investing.
2020 Best of Green Schools Awards
The Center for Green Schools at USGBC, in partnership with Green Schools National Network, invites nominations for the Best of Green Schools 2020 awards. The Best of Green Schools celebrates significant strides toward creating more sustainable schools. Winners will be announced and awarded in 10 categories, including one for higher education institutions or faculty members who have made a significant contribution to the K–12 green schools movement, at the 2020 Green Schools Conference and Expo, to be held March 2–4, 2020, in Portland, Oregon. All submissions are due on Nov. 18.
2020-2021 Newman Civic Fellows Nominations
Campus Compact is seeking community-committed students from member institutions for the next cohort of Nemwan Civic Fellows. The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes and supports community-committed students who are changemakers and public problem-solvers at Campus Compact member institutions. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides students with training and resources that nurture their assets and passions and help them develop strategies for social change. Nominations will be accepted through Feb. 3.
Global Survey on Sustainability Publishing & Research in Higher Education
The European School of Sustainability Science and Research and the Inter-University Sustainable Development Research Program have released this survey that aims to understand the breadth and sources of research and publications on sustainability in higher education. The deadline to participate is Nov. 15.
Campus 2030 Challenge
University professors, researchers and students are encouraged to submit proposals that articulate the college campus of 2030, having achieved the 17 SDGs. Project ideas should take into account the social, environmental and economic dimensions of the 2030 agenda and should include at least three of the 17 Goals. The deadline to submit a five-slide presentation that explains the idea is Feb. 16.
Sustainability Survey From University of Southern Mississippi Researcher
The questionnaire is designed to obtain a more in-depth look into the political setting and identification of sustainability within universities. This survey gathers data from sustainability leaders from public and private four-year U.S. universities that have an identifiable entity that includes the word sustainability, or a similar variant of the term, in their name.
Energy to Lead Competition 2020
Any higher education institution in New York State that is a REV Campus Challenge member is eligible to participate in the Energy to Lead Competition 2020. The competition will award up to $5 million, ranging from $500,000 and $1.5 million per award. Winning proposals will highlight cost-effective, deep and impactful energy savings projects leading to decarbonization. Proposals should also integrate student engagement and share best practices with other campuses. The deadline to submit a proposal is Feb. 20.

Wege Prize 2020 Call for Team Applications
Wege Prize is an annual competition that aims to ignite game-changing solutions for the future by inspiring college/university students around the world to collaborate across institutional, disciplinary and cultural boundaries to redesign the way economies work. Participants contend for over $30,000 (USD) in total cash prizes. ACUI Excellence in Innovations in Sustainability Award
The Excellence in Innovations in Sustainability award recognizes campuses that solve environmental challenges through innovative and sustainable practices or creative partnerships. The award is designed to encourage and reward a campus on the leading edge of facilities trends through its production and application of sustainability outcomes. The application deadline is Dec. 6.
2019 Campus RainWorks Challenge
The Campus RainWorks Challenge seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students to foster a dialogue about responsible stormwater management and showcase the environmental, economic and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Student teams will design an innovative green infrastructure project for their campus that effectively manages stormwater pollution while benefiting the campus community and the environment. Registration is open until Oct. 15, and participating teams must submit completed entries by Dec. 17.
RCE Awards 2019
The Global RCE Service Center at the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability invites nominations for the 8th annual RCE (Regional Center of Excellence) Awards. RCEs are encouraged to nominate one or more of their education for sustainable development (ESD) projects for the award. ESD projects should illustrate how RCEs address local sustainable development challenges, and therefore provide an example of how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be implemented at the local level through quality education. Nominations are due by Oct. 31.
Eric Zencey Prize in Ecological Economics
The Gund Institute for Environment at the University of Vermont invites submissions for the inaugural Eric Zencey Prize in Ecological Economics, which celebrates outstanding writing on the environmental limits of our planet. Named after scholar Eric Zencey (1954-2019), the prize will recognize the best current affairs book or long-form journalism that addresses real-world environmental challenges using the principles of ecological economics, a field that explores the relationships between economics and Earth’s limited natural resources. The submission deadline is Jan. 6.
Call for Submissions: Special Climate Change Issue: 'Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics'
The Department of Health Sciences at California State University, East Bay invites submissions for a special issue of the "Journal of Law, Medicine, and Ethics" on the legal and ethical issues facing healthcare and public health systems as they wrestle with the challenges of climate change. Clinton Global Initiative University Call for Applications
The Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) is looking for higher education student leaders who are committed to taking action in their community to address a pressing challenge. Recyclemania 2020 Registration
Colleges and universities can sign up to participate in the 2020 competition, which is a platform for colleges and universities to have a friendly waste reduction competition over an eight-week period in the spring. Institutions will report recycling and trash amounts each week and are ranked in various categories.

The Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments is seeking applications for its new nursing student committee.
