STARS 2019 Data Quality Boot Camp Series

The STARS Data Quality Boot Camp Series is a set of webinars that will provide insights into submitting a high-quality STARS report by the deadline for the 2019 Sustainable Campus Index, Princeton Review and Sierra. There is an overview webinar, which will focus on general tips that apply across all STARS categories and credits, and one webinar for each of the STARS categories - Academics, Engagement, Operations, and Planning and Administration - that will focus data accuracy tips for credits that are commonly misinterpreted.

Call for Chapter Proposals: Civil Society and Social Responsibility in Higher Education

Higher Education Teaching and Learning encourages chapter submissions for an upcoming book titled Civil Society and Social Responsibility in Higher Education. The editors are looking at three potential volumes under the subheadings of: International Perspectives on Curriculum and Teaching Development; International Perspectives on University Community Partnerships; and International Perspectives on Leadership and Strategies. Interdisciplinary Sustainability Teaching & Research Workshop

This workshop targets faculty who participate in interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship around social-ecological systems in the natural and social sciences, and humanities. It will explore social-ecological systems (SES) challenges, identify what faculty are doing along disciplinary SES gradients, find solutions for stronger and more transparent collaboration, and establish a network of interdisciplinary SES scholars. The workshop is hosted by Furman University from Feb. 28 through March 3. Furman University is one of 13 regional AASHE Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum. Patagonia and the Berkeley Haas Center for Responsible Business are partnering to host the fourth annual Patagonia Case Competition. Graduate students from across the world tackle the interconnected business and sustainability aspects of a current, real-life issue facing the outdoor gear retailer Patagonia. University Sign-On Statement: The Montreal Protocol & Reduction of HFCs

Negotiated in October, 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda, the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol is an international treaty guiding the phase down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) worldwide. The U.S. has not yet ratified the treaty, which goes into effect in 2019. Second Nature is beginning to recruit campuses to sign onto a statement, which contains a broad message of support for ratification of the Kigali Amendment and the development of policy to phase down hydrofluorocarbons. It highlights the business advantage of developing alternative technologies.

Call for Contributions: UNESCO Position Paper on the Future of Education for Sustainable Development

UNESCO has prepared a position paper that reflects on the increasing importance of Education for Sustainable Development as an integral element of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on quality education and a key enabler of all the other SDGs, and proposes a strategy for 2020-2030. UNESCO invites review and commenting of the draft by completing the online comment sheet by Nov. 9. The final draft of the paper will be submitted in 2019 to the governing bodies of UNESCO and the U.N. General Assembly for their approval. Once approved, it will be summarized into a program and launched in 2020 for implementation.

Energy Efficiency Retrofit Implementation in Buildings Survey

As part of the dissertation of Lysandra Amanta Medal, a Ph.D. student in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington, this survey aims to collect information about decision processes related to prioritizing building energy-efficiency retrofit projects. Participants can be those that manage the building operations and maintenance, participate in selecting energy-efficiency or other building upgrades, or provide services to help organizations make energy-efficiency or other building upgrades. Participants may choose to be entered in a drawing to win one of 15 Starbucks gift cards (valued at $20). The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Recyclemania 2019

RecycleMania is a friendly competition dedicated to improving recycling and waste reduction efforts at colleges and universities. For eight weeks each spring, hundreds of schools across the country rally the campus to recycle, compost and reduce waste in an effort to beat rival campuses.

Call for Contributions: Encyclopedia of the Sustainable Development Goals

The Encyclopedia of the Sustainable Development Goals: Transforming the World We Want will be published by Springer as part of the World Sustainability Series. It will contain a volume on each one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Each SDG will have 100 terms associated with it. Contributing authors will be assigned one term from the selected SDG. Interested scholars need to submit an expression of interest that includes the SDG toward which they want to contribute.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition comprising 10 contests that challenges student teams to design and build highly efficient and innovative buildings powered by renewable energy. Free AASHE 2018 Workshop: Financing & Legal Strategies for Renewable Energy Procurement by Colleges & Universities

This no cost pre-conference workshop outlines new opportunities for energy procurement by colleges and universities. It will include panels on The Ohio State University's innovative 50-year energy management partnership with ENGIE Services and on options for the purchase of renewable energy (including on-site and off-site generation). Elizabeth Kocs, director of Energy Institute at University of Illinois-Chicago, will give the keynote address. Break Free From Plastic Campus Pledge

Post-Landfill Action Network (PLAN) has released a pledge to guide campuses through the long-term elimination of single-use disposable plastics. The Break Free From Plastic campus pledge and toolkit address accessibility and inclusivity concerns and generate a framework for college campuses to develop long-term systemic solutions to issues around waste.

Free Online Green Office Course

Through a series of four 60-90 minute phone calls, the Green Office Course aims to help participants start or improve a green office program at a college or university. The learning goals of the course include pitching the green office model to students and staff, making the case for institutional sustainability, and designing an initial design for a green office. The English version of the course begins on Oct. 24. The deadline to apply is Oct. 16.
