Call for AASHE Advisory Council Applications
AASHE seeks interested candidates to serve on its Advisory Council, which provides advice and guidance on high-level strategy as well as specific AASHE programs and services. New this year, the STARS Technical Advisors are being incorporated into the Advisory Council. The AC brings together leaders from diverse backgrounds to identify the opportunities and challenges facing sustainability in higher education. Applications are being accepted through Nov. 14.
2018-2019 International Green Gown Awards
The International Green Gown Awards recognize exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges. Supported by U.N. Environment and the Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES), the program is open to any university or college, except where there is an existing Green Gown Awards program. The deadline to apply is Jan. 1, 2019.
PepsiCo Recycling Zero Impact Funding
Through the Zero Impact Fund, schools can submit ideas to accomplish their environmental, economic and social goals, with winning applications receiving up to $10,000 each from PepsiCo Recycling. The deadline to submit for funding is on or before Dec. 21.
Request for Proposals: Collegiate Wind Competition 2020
The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory has issued a request for proposals to colleges and universities interested in participating in the 2020 Collegiate Wind Competition. The organizers will select 10 to 12 teams of students to compete in the challenge. The deadline to apply is Nov. 30.
Call for Contributions: UNESCO Position Paper on the Future of Education for Sustainable Development
UNESCO has prepared a position paper that reflects on the increasing importance of Education for Sustainable Development as an integral element of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on quality education and a key enabler of all the other SDGs, and proposes a strategy for 2020-2030. UNESCO invites review and commenting of the draft by completing the online comment sheet by Nov. 9. The final draft of the paper will be submitted in 2019 to the governing bodies of UNESCO and the U.N. General Assembly for their approval. Once approved, it will be summarized into a program and launched in 2020 for implementation.
Call for AASHE Webinar Proposals
Proposals for AASHE webinars in 2019 are being accepted through Nov. 2. Proposals can be suitable for any level and on any topic relevant to AASHE’s diverse membership. AASHE staff will provide guidance on how to prepare presentation slides and training on the webinar platform, and will share best practices for presenting a webinar.
Students for Zero Waste Travel Scholarship
Eligible students can apply for a scholarship, up to $400, to attend the Students for Zero Waste Conference, happening in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from Nov. 2-3, 2018. Preference will be given to groups of people who are sharing a ride, traveling far distances and/or presenting workshops. The deadline to apply is Oct. 12.
Energy Efficiency Retrofit Implementation in Buildings Survey
As part of the dissertation of Lysandra Amanta Medal, a Ph.D. student in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington, this survey aims to collect information about decision processes related to prioritizing building energy-efficiency retrofit projects. Participants can be those that manage the building operations and maintenance, participate in selecting energy-efficiency or other building upgrades, or provide services to help organizations make energy-efficiency or other building upgrades. Participants may choose to be entered in a drawing to win one of 15 Starbucks gift cards (valued at $20). The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
Recyclemania 2019
RecycleMania is a friendly competition dedicated to improving recycling and waste reduction efforts at colleges and universities. For eight weeks each spring, hundreds of schools across the country rally the campus to recycle, compost and reduce waste in an effort to beat rival campuses.
Call for Contributions: Encyclopedia of the Sustainable Development Goals
The Encyclopedia of the Sustainable Development Goals: Transforming the World We Want will be published by Springer as part of the World Sustainability Series. It will contain a volume on each one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Each SDG will have 100 terms associated with it. Contributing authors will be assigned one term from the selected SDG. Interested scholars need to submit an expression of interest that includes the SDG toward which they want to contribute.
2019 Ashoka U Exchange Call for Presentations
Ashoka U encourages submissions for the 2019 Ashoka U Exchange, happening Feb. 21-23, in San Diego, California. The gathering is a platform for sharing best practices and lessons learned to transform higher education into a tool for social change and impact. This year’s theme is Beyond Boundaries and Borders: Expanding Possibilities for the Future of Higher Education. Presentation submissions are due Sept. 26.
Call for Proposals: U.S Dept of Energy Solar Decathlon
The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition comprising 10 contests that challenges student teams to design and build highly efficient and innovative buildings powered by renewable energy. This Solar Decathlon, which spans 2019 and 2020, gives teams the option to participate in one of two challenges: the Design Challenge or the Build Challenge. Whether participating in the Design or Build Challenge, all teams are evaluated across 10 contests.
Sierra Student Coalition Climate Justice League
The Climate Justice League is a 10-week-long organizing fellowship for high school and college aged students that want to learn key organizing and leadership skills, meet other youth activists from around the country, and take action for climate and social justice. The final deadline to apply is Sept. 25.
AASHE Member Discount: $100 Off Sustainability Certification Through ISSP
The International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) offers students, faculty and staff from AASHE-member schools a $100 discount on the ISSP Sustainability Associate (ISSP-SA) credential exam. The program is designed to recognize the knowledge, skills and abilities of those in the sustainability field, including students with knowledge of core sustainability concepts.
National Council for Science and Environment (NCSE) 2019 Conference
Early bird registration is open for the National Council for Science and Environment 2019 Conference, taking place Jan. 7-10, in Washington, D.C. This year’s conference theme is Sustainable Infrastructure and Resilience. Attendees will look at the opportunities and challenges for sustainability at the convergence of built, natural, social and cyber infrastructure. Attendees will also explore examples of community resilience and discuss how to apply best practices in their community.
2019 Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit Call for Proposals
The 2019 Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit, happening Feb. 10-12 in Tempe, Arizona, is a national gathering of higher education presidents, chancellors, trustees and other senior leaders working to accelerate climate solutions through all aspects of institutional activities. Proposals are being accepted on a variety of topics from building consensus across the campus for climate action to transformational education strategies around climate education. The event is hosted by Second Nature and Intentional Endowments Institute.
Wege Prize 2019 Call for Team Applications
Wege Prize 2019 is looking for undergraduate and graduate students who want to work together to re-think and re-design the way economies work by creating regenerative solutions that have a widespread and lasting impact. Teams will contend for $30,000 in total cash prizes. The Wege Prize is organized by Kendall College of Art and Design’s Wege Center for Sustainable Design with support from the Wege Foundation. The deadline for team applications and research plan is Nov. 18.
Call for Chapter Proposals: Innovations in Higher Education Teaching and Learning
The Emerald Group Publishing is compiling a volume in Innovations in Higher Education Teaching and Learning that aims to explore the educational opportunities and challenges in integrating sustainability in higher education. Supporting Sustainable Development Goal 4, and any of the other goals being implemented in higher education, the tentative volume titles are "Integrating sustainable development into the curriculum", "Sustainable development leadership and strategies", and "University partnerships for sustainable development". One-page chapter proposals are due Oct. 3.
US Composting Council Annual Awards
The U.S. Composting Council 2018 annual awards are comprised of eight different award categories that honor either individual or organizational efforts to increase the composting market. U.S. Composting Council members can submit a nomination by Oct. 1.
Free AASHE 2018 Workshop: Financing & Legal Strategies for Renewable Energy Procurement by Colleges & Universities
This no cost pre-conference workshop outlines new opportunities for energy procurement by colleges and universities. It will include panels on The Ohio State University's innovative 50-year energy management partnership with ENGIE Services and on options for the purchase of renewable energy (including on-site and off-site generation). Elizabeth Kocs, director of Energy Institute at University of Illinois-Chicago, will give the keynote address. The workshop will take place on Monday, Oct. 1 from 2-5 p.m. at the Pittsburgh office of the law firm K&L Gates.
Break Free From Plastic Campus Pledge
Post-Landfill Action Network (PLAN) has released a pledge to guide campuses through the long-term elimination of single-use disposable plastics. The Break Free From Plastic campus pledge and toolkit address accessibility and inclusivity concerns and generate a framework for college campuses to develop long-term systemic solutions to issues around waste.
Free Online Green Office Course
Through a series of four 60-90 minute phone calls, the Green Office Course aims to help participants start or improve a green office program at a college or university. The learning goals of the course include pitching the green office model to students and staff, making the case for institutional sustainability, and designing an initial design for a green office. The English version of the course begins on Oct. 24. The deadline to apply is Oct. 16.
Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference Call for Proposals
The call for proposals is open for the Washington and Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC), happening Feb. 25-27, 2019 at the University of Washington. Examining systemic change and generating dialogue, WOHESC 2019 aims to continue its work advancing equity, diversity and inclusion through thematic elements, speakers and attendees. The submission deadline is Oct. 5.
2018 Campus Sustainability Month
Celebrate Campus Sustainability Month (CSM) this October by engaging and inspiring incoming students and other campus stakeholders to become sustainability leaders. The theme for this year’s CSM is Nonpartisan Engagement and the November Elections. Complementing Earth Day, CSM aims to provide campus sustainability advocates with a platform through which to deepen campus engagement around sustainability.
Three Days Left to Apply: Turning the Page on Campus Paper Use
Apply to be part of a new cohort of 10-12 institutions of higher education who will receive training and support to implement a behavior-based strategy to reduce paper use. This new cohort will focus specifically on campaigns to reduce the number of personal desktop printers, which AASHE and Root Solutions have identified as a high impact strategy for reducing costs and paper use. The deadline for applications is Sept. 7.
2018 GameDay Recycling Challenge
Colleges and universities across the U.S. and Canada can register for the GameDay Recycling Challenge, a friendly competition that promotes waste reduction at football games. The challenge is presented through a new partnership with National Wildlife Federation, and continued partnership with RecycleMania Inc, College & University Recycling Coalition (CURC), and U.S. EPA’s WasteWise program.
AASHE 2018 Workshop: Best Practices in Integrating Sustainability and Business Education
The focus of this half-day, post-conference workshop will be integrating the B Corp Impact Assessment framework into business curriculum while facilitating cross disciplinary engagement with non-business students and faculty. Impact Assessment frameworks help businesses identify and measure the material impacts their operations have on environmental and social resources. Participants will learn how to implement their own integration activities. This workshop will be presented by Tammy Kowalczyk and Jessica Thomas from Appalachian State University.
AASHE 2018 Workshop: Key Competencies in Sustainability: Curriculum and Program Development
This half-day, post-conference workshop will explore questions for the field of sustainability in higher education related to key competencies in sustainability degree programs. Workshop participants will share the learning outcomes of their courses/curricula and compare these with each others and with key competencies in sustainability. The workshop aims to identify lessons learned for the future development of key competencies in sustainability and formulate next steps, including what would be useful support structures for institutions to support development and administration of sustainability programs in the field. It will be presented by Ira Feldman with the Sustainability Curriculum Consortium, and Katja Brundiers, Christopher Boone and Rod Parnell at Northern Arizona University.

The International Society of Sustainability Professionals offers continuing education units (CEUs) to those attending or presenting sessions, workshops, tours and/or evening events at AASHE 2018, happening in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from Oct. 2-5. Up to two CEUs can be earned by attending the conference. Additional CEUs can be earned by attending a workshop, tour and/or evening event. The last day to register online is Sept. 17.
Call for Contributions: Environmental Education for Sustainability
The journal Sustainability is curating a special issue titled Environmental Education for Sustainability that intends to document and promote scholarly research and projects that show how environmental education can help the implementation of sustainability efforts. Emphasis will be given to both formal and non-formal education, as well as to innovative teaching methods, inclusive approaches and transformative processes that may lead to a better interaction between environmental education and sustainable development. The deadline for manuscripts is April 10.
Project Green Challenge 2018
Taking place Oct. 1-31, Project Green Challenge 2018 invites college students to participate in 30 days of sustainability-themed challenges. Each day of the challenge, 20 prize packages will be awarded to participants. Up to 16 finalists will be flown to San Francisco to attend a four-day eco-summit in late November.

AASHE 2018 Workshop: To Rise, We Need Critical Conversations About ‘Unsustainable’ Race, Class & Gender Privilege
This half-day, post-conference workshop is designed to help participants dive more deeply into the complicated and often fraught conversation about race, class and gender privilege in the service of developing more collaborative campus sustainability efforts. In addition to setting a shared understanding of how systems of oppression work and their impacts on climate change, environmental issues and sustainability work, this session identifies the unconscious and unintentional ways race, class and gender privilege thwart collective sustainability work on campuses. Participants will learn ways to interrupt and dismantle these privileged dynamics and connect this social justice work to campus sustainability efforts. This workshop will be presented by Heather Hackman of Hackman Consulting Group.
AASHE 2018 Student Summit Registration Ends Soon
The Student Summit on Oct. 2 at the 2018 AASHE Conference & Expo is a platform for student sustainability leaders to network with hundreds of other like-minded students from around the globe. Attendees will learn change-maker strategies for their campuses and communities and have the opportunity to connect with professional organizations and activist networks that can amplify their efforts and provide ongoing support. Garrett Blad, currently executive coordinator of SustainUS, is the keynote speaker. The last day to register online for the Student Summit is Sept. 17.
NWEI Campus EcoChallenge
The Campus EcoChallenge led by Northwest Earth Institute is a campus engagement tool that encourages behavior change toward sustainable action. With nine categories to choose from, including a "create your own", the dashboard allows participants to track their progress and connect with other participants. Registration begins Aug. 15.
Call for Submissions: Safety Culture in Makerspaces and EHS Sustainability
The Campus Safety, Health, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA) Symposia encourages submissions to its upcoming event in Atlanta, from Nov. 13-14, focused on developing a safety culture in makerspaces and ensuring campus sustainability initiatives and sustainable spaces are founded in strong Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) practices and principles. EHS professionals, sustainability professionals, faculty, staff and students can submit sessions through Aug.17.
AASHE 2018 Workshop: Leverage Your Renewable Energy Impact Through Emerging Avoided Emissions PPA Strategies
This half-day, pre-conference workshop on Oct. 2 delves into renewable energy partnerships by examining the contemporary methods for reducing an institution’s greenhouse gas emissions using renewable energy procurement. In addition to hearing about how Boston University successfully worked with both private and academic partners to choose a renewable energy project, participants will review carbon emission accounting practices including traditional and marginal emission approaches using data synthesized by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University. The workshop will be presented by Dennis Carlberg and Casey Kelly at Boston University; Inês Azevedo at Carnegie Mellon University; Christen Blum at Edison Energy; and Gavin McCormick with WattTime.
2018 Tobacco-Free Grants for MSIs, & Community & Womens' Colleges
Truth Initiative is accepting applications for its Tobacco-Free College Program, which offers grants of up to $20,000 to women’s colleges, minority-serving academic institutions and community colleges to adopt a 100 percent tobacco-free-college policy. The deadline to apply is September 13.
Projects That Matter Platform
Projects That Matter is a free nonprofit website connecting practitioners, students, faculty and volunteers with real world sustainable development projects. Researchers and practitioners can register their projects, and students and volunteers can search the database for course projects, independent study, thesis, capstone, and alternative assignments and activities. The platform is an initiative of the U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development in collaboration with Changing the Present.
Academic Bicycle Challenge
The Academic Bicycle Challenge is for college and university staff, faculty and students to track their cycled miles for a chance to appear on one of eight different leaderboard types. The competition will reveal a global comparison of cycling activities between universities, academic disciplines, self-generated teams and individuals.
AASHE 2018 Workshop: Develop Your Toolkit for Sustainability Communication
This half-day, pre-conference workshop will explore how communications plays an increasingly important role as we rise to the challenge to reach the global Sustainable Development Goals. Learn how to create a communications strategy, discover best practices and get the tools to create a strong communications strategy to promote your sustainability initiatives. It will be presented by Pamela Gramlich at Colgate University; Nathan Jandl at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Lisa Nicolaison at Princeton University.
Divest Invest Network Global Press Event
Any school that is planning on, or close to a decision on, divesting from fossil fuels is encouraged to participate in a coordinated publicity push and press event organized by Divest Invest Network. The press event will be in coordination with the Global Climate Action Summit taking place on Sept. 12-14.
